John
2. 13 – 22
The same story appears in all four gospels
and so is important. John is laying it
down in a particular way and not just as a factual record of truth. Why has the story moved places (as opposed
to the others)? The
Synopsis shows progression through Jesus’ life. The Pharisees question John. Baptism, Lamb of God, Nathaniel and Philip. The wedding and water – the Bridegroom church. This story of the Passover. A synopsis of Jesus’ story in symbolism told in poetic language. The word became flesh so after this John fills in
gaps and the final discourse.

These headings are centred around Passover and Feasts in
Story at beginning of Gospel shows Jesus’ authority. Cf Mark 1. 22,27) written in retrospect.

When we looked at John 2.5 “do whatever he tells you” Mary trusted and believed before she saw the transformation of the water into wine or the revelation/sign of who Jesus was. Compared with John 2.23 where many believed because they saw the signs he was doing.
Cleansing
The Jews = opposition/enemy already told Jesus is the Passover lamb.
This had a new meaning to the Passover
Tom Wright suggests John wants us to
understand what Jesus did in
Jesus is the true temple – back to the word made flesh.

John was writing for people who do not sacrifice or have temples.
This is more than temple worship.
Today we must re-examine what we do.
It is as hard for us as it was for them.
We have to go out on a limb. Be proactive
